Latin America’s UNESCO sites are in danger – level 1

14-08-2026 07:00

Two famous places in Latin America are in big danger today.

Machu Picchu in Peru has too many tourists every year. Many people walk on old stones and damage the site. Bad weather and heavy rain also cause big problems. The government now limits how many people can visit each day. In Honduras, people cut down big trees in a famous rainforest. Illegal farms, gold mining, and criminals destroy the forest and harm wild animals.

Local people try to save their land, but it is dangerous. Experts say that countries must work together now to help save these special nature sites.

Difficult words: site (a specific place where something is located), limit (the maximum number or amount which is still possible), mining (digging into the ground to get metals).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What problems are damaging Machu Picchu, and what action has the government taken to protect it?
