Two famous UNESCO World Heritage sites in Latin America are facing serious threats from human activity and climate change.

In Peru, the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu receives nearly 1.8 million visitors every year. Heavy foot traffic is eroding fragile stone structures, while extreme weather, melting glaciers, and severe waste management issues cause further environmental damage. Authorities have introduced a four-year master plan to restrict daily visitor numbers to 5,600 and improve waste treatment. Meanwhile, Honduras’ Rio Plátano Biosphere Reserve, Central America’s largest remaining rainforest, is severely threatened by illegal cattle ranching, illegal logging, gold mining, and drug trafficking. Deforestation is destroying ecosystems, archaeological ruins, and local wildlife, while indigenous leaders face violent threats for defending their lands.

According to UNESCO officials, saving these irreplaceable treasures requires urgent international cooperation, better funding, and strict enforcement. Local communities, archaeologists, and global organizations must work together closely to protect these historical and natural monuments before they are lost forever.
