Indonesia has too much waste – level 2

17-08-2026 07:00

Indonesia has a very big trash problem because many landfills are full. Near Jakarta, the biggest landfill is 65 meters high, like a tall building. Working there is dangerous because of hot fires and trash landslides.

In March, a large garbage collapse killed seven workers. Now, the government wants to stop open dumping and make landfills safer. Officials plan to clean up the slopes, build better water systems, and ask people to sort their trash before throwing it away.

Thousands of poor workers are worried about these changes. They make money by finding and selling old plastic or metal items from the trash. The government promises that the new laws will create better, safer jobs at new recycling plants to help everyone.

Difficult words: landfill (a large public area where garbage is buried under the ground or piled up into mountains), collapse (falling down suddenly), open dumping (leaving trash in open fields or unmanaged areas without protective covers or safety controls).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What actions do officials plan to take to stop open dumping and make landfills safer?
