Is the Arctic route good for container ships? – level 1
25-08-2026 07:00
Big ships want new ways to travel because old routes in the Middle East have problems. A ship from South Korea is trying a new sea route through the Arctic to Europe.
The Arctic route saves a lot of time because it is shorter. But the water has ice, and ships can only sail there in summer for three months. Ships also need help from Russian icebreaker boats to move through the ice.
Because of ice, high costs, and political problems with Russia, many European companies do not want to use this cold route. Right now, this route mostly helps ships trading between Russia and China.
Difficult words: route (a way from a starting place to a destination), icebreaker (a strong ship which breaks through ice and clears a path for other boats), costs (the money which you must spend to buy or do something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What reasons does the text give for many European companies avoiding the Arctic sea route?
