A South Korean ship is testing a new sailing route through the cold Arctic to carry goods to Europe. Companies want new sea routes because regular paths through the Middle East face serious problems and security threats.

The Arctic route is much shorter, but experts say it has many big difficulties. Ships can only sail there for less than three months during the summer when ice melts. Vessels also need special equipment to travel safely through ice, which requires very expensive insurance.

Also, ships must get official permission from Russia and use Russian icebreaker ships to help them pass. Because of these safety risks and political problems, most Western companies choose another route. It seems that this Arctic path mostly helps trade between Russia and China.

Difficult words: route (a particular way or path taken to get from a starting place to a destination), security threat (a dangerous situation or risk that could cause harm or damage), insurance (an arrangement where you pay money to a company so they pay you back if something gets damaged or lost).
