Rescued chimpanzees from research laboratories are receiving specialized lifelong care at the Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge in Liberia.

Many of these animals were originally captured from the wild as infants and spent years inside testing facilities. Today, they live in social groups on mangrove-covered islands where they can roam freely.

Because these West African chimpanzees belong to a subspecies listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to rapidly declining numbers, protecting them is essential. To monitor their health as they age, specialists conduct comprehensive medical examinations, including blood tests, fecal tests, ultrasounds, and joint mobility checks.

Sanctuary officials emphasize that regular health monitoring allows them to detect diseases early, evaluate bone and muscle health, and provide these elderly animals with a safe, high-quality environment for the rest of their lives.
