Rescued chimpanzees from research laboratories now live safely at a sanctuary in Liberia.

Many were taken from the wild as babies and lived in laboratories for many years. Today, they live together in groups on islands where they can move around freely.

These West African chimpanzees are critically endangered because their population is dropping quickly. Specialists at the sanctuary give the animals full health checks to care for them as they get older. Doctors check their blood, bones, and muscles, and do ultrasounds to make sure they are healthy.

Regular checks help the team find sickness early and give the chimpanzees good care for the rest of their lives.

Difficult words: sanctuary (a safe place where animals or people are protected from harm), endangered (in danger), ultrasound (a medical test to see pictures of the inside of the body).
