A mysterious floating island covered with growing trees has recently appeared in Williston Lake, Canada, which surprised both residents and experts.

A resident captured video footage of the unusual island in July, but it vanished just a few days later, a movement confirmed by satellite imagery. The mystery deepened on August 31, when the island was photographed again in the reservoir. Experts believe the phenomenon was created over many years. Trees had been growing undisturbed on piles of woody debris along the shoreline. Recently, rising water levels in the reservoir lifted the heavy mass of wood and soil and set it free to float across the water.

Representatives of the government utility managing the dam suggest that during the periods when the island seemed to disappear, it had simply drifted back toward the shore or moved out of view before floating away again.
