A mysterious island – level 2

11-09-2026 07:00

In July, a floating island with trees on it appeared in a lake in Canada. Local people were very surprised, and satellite pictures showed that the island quickly disappeared a few days later.

At the end of August, a resident saw the island again and took a photo. Experts believe they know why this happened. For many years, trees grew on wood and dirt near the water’s edge.

The experts explained that when the water level in the lake went up, it lifted the ground and set the small island free to float on the water. When people couldn’t see it, the island probably just floated to a different shore. This makes sense, but for many people, it is still something mysterious.

Difficult words: disappear (to go away from a place so that you cannot be seen), shore (the land along the edge of a lake, sea, or river), mysterious (strange or difficult to understand or explain).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How did experts explain that rising water levels lifted the ground with trees free and let the small island float to a different shore?
