An athlete wins a race while sick – level 1

18-09-2026 07:00

Joanna Wietrzyk is an athlete from Australia. She wins a big fitness race in Beijing, China. But she was very sick during the event.

Joanna has bad stomach problems. She has feces on her legs. She makes the sports equipment dirty. After the race, she goes to a hospital. She puts a photo on the internet. She is happy to win the race. Some people say that she is very strong. Other people say that it is dirty and dangerous for other runners.

Nobody stops Joanna during the race. People on the internet ask why. The workers at the event must clean the room. They put down new carpets. Many people now talk about how safe sport is for athletes.

Difficult words: feces (poop), equipment (the tools or machines which you need to do an activity or sport), dirty (not clean).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did some people call Joanna's victory dirty and dangerous for other runners?
