Are wind turbines safe for birds? – level 3

08-10-2026 07:00

As offshore wind energy rapidly expands across Europe, scientists are using thermal cameras and AI to study the impact of wind turbines on migrating birds.

Millions of birds cross the North Sea every year; however, it is difficult to measure collision risks at sea due to dark night conditions and remote locations.

In a year-long pilot study at a Dutch wind farm, researchers placed sixteen thermal cameras on a turbine to monitor bird activity day and night. Out of millions of bird movements recorded over two migration seasons, the team identified only two confirmed collisions. Other studies used radar technology and similarly showed that over 99.8% of migrating birds successfully avoid turbine blades.

While these initial findings suggest that offshore wind farms pose a lower threat than previously feared, conservationists emphasize that careful site selection, smart technology, and protective measures remain important to protect endangered seabird populations during the clean energy transition.

Difficult words: turbine (a machine with blades that are turned by water, wind, or steam to produce power), blade (a wide, flat arm on a propeller or wind turbine that spins in the air), conservationist (a person who works to protect animals, plants, and natural environments).
