Are wind turbines safe for birds? – level 1

08-10-2026 07:00

Countries in Europe build big wind turbines in the sea for clean energy from wind. But millions of birds fly over the sea every year. People want to keep them safe.

Scientists put sixteen thermal cameras on a turbine to watch birds during the day and night. In one year, millions of birds fly near the turbine. Only two birds hit it. Other studies also show that almost all birds fly around the turbines safely.

Experts say that these results are good news. But we must still help the birds and keep them safe.

Difficult words: wind turbine (a tall structure which turns wind power into electricity), thermal camera (a special which records heat), result (the information which you get at the end of a test or study).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How many birds hit the turbine in the one-year study using sixteen thermal cameras?
