India’s big river project – level 2
16-10-2026 07:00
In India, many villagers are protesting against a big government plan to join two rivers.
The government wants to build a big dam to bring water to dry areas and help farmers grow food. But rising water from the construction is already flooding homes, farmland, and temples. Local people say the government is taking their land without giving them enough money or a new home. Some protesters say they will not leave their land. Nature experts are also worried because the project will flood a large forest and hurt tigers living in a famous reserve.
Government leaders say the project is needed to solve water problems, but many locals and experts want the government to stop and fix these serious problems first.
Difficult words: dam (a strong wall built across a river to stop or control the flow of water), flood (to cover a place with a large amount of water), reserve (a protected area of land kept for wild animals).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What complaints do local people make about how the government is handling land, compensation, and relocation for the dam project?
