India’s big river project – level 3

16-10-2026 07:00

Villagers in central India are protesting against a massive government project to link two major rivers in order to help millions of local farmers.

The plan aims to build a large dam and move water to areas facing severe drought; however, construction work has already caused rising waters to flood nearby villages, homes, and a local temple. Angry residents say the government is not giving them enough money or a new place to rebuild their lives. Some protesters have even taken extreme actions, like lying on fake funeral fires to show their anger.

At the same time, environmental experts warn that the new dam will destroy large areas of forest and harm rare wildlife inside a famous tiger reserve. While government officials claim the project will solve long-term water shortages and bring power to the region, critics argue the scientific plans are flawed and urge leaders to protect both local communities and nature.

Difficult words: rare (not common or frequent; very unusual), shortage (a situation where there is not enough of something that people need), flawed (not perfect).
