Farming in Iceland – level 3
20-10-2026 15:00
Despite its cold climate, limited farmland, and remote location, Iceland is using its natural resources, including geothermal heat, pure water, and clean renewable electricity, to transform food production.
Innovators are building indoor and underground farms to grow crops that are usually difficult to cultivate in the North. For example, a former IT worker set up an underground farm growing thousands of sweet Japanese strawberries, which they sell locally. Other startups are finding clever ways to repurpose waste heat from data centers by channeling it into modified shipping containers to grow microgreens and fresh produce, which helps reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported food.
Additionally, advanced aquaculture facilities cultivate large amounts of microalgae in 10,000-liter reactors. They produce valuable natural compounds for dietary supplements and prove that the island’s unique environment offers a sustainable advantage for agricultural innovation.
Difficult words: geothermal (relating to or produced by the natural heat inside the earth), cultivate (to grow and care for plants or crops under controlled conditions), microgreens (very small vegetable greens harvested soon after the first leaves appear, valued for intense flavor and nutrients).

What crop does the former IT worker’s underground farm grow, and how do other startups use data center waste heat to help reduce Iceland’s reliance on imported food?
