Farming in Iceland – level 2
20-10-2026 15:00
Iceland has cold weather and very little farmland, but it has plenty of clean energy, hot water, and natural heat. Because of this, clever innovators are finding new ways to grow food indoors.
For example, a former tech worker opened an underground farm where thousands of sweet Japanese strawberries grow successfully.
Other startups are using waste heat from computer data centers inside shipping containers to grow fresh greens, which helps Iceland import less food from abroad. Near geothermal plants, companies are also growing microalgae in huge tanks. They use Iceland’s natural cold air to keep the tanks cool and clean geothermal energy to run the facility. These algae are then dried and used to make healthy dietary supplements.
All these examples show how Iceland turns its harsh climate into a great advantage.
Difficult words: innovator (a person who introduces new methods, ideas, or products), shipping container (a large metal box used to transport goods on ships, trucks, and trains), geothermal plant (a facility which uses heat from inside the earth to make electricity or provide heating).
