Canada and Europe want to work closer together – level 3
03-11-2026 07:00
A summit in Montreal has highlighted a growing push to deepen political and economic ties between Canada and the EU.
Motivated by trade disputes, geopolitical friction, and economic pressures from the United States, many Canadians are actively favoring European trade over American imports. While European Commission leadership proposed the idea of making Canada an associate member, major member states like France and Germany remain hesitant due to treaty limits and undefined legal terms.
Despite these political hurdles, practical integration is already accelerating across some sectors. Canada has joined joint defense procurement programs and is exploring agreements covering energy, critical raw materials, and student exchanges. Both Canadian and European leaders view this closer partnership as essential for protecting national sovereignty, reducing dangerous dependencies on global superpowers, and securing critical supply chains in an increasingly unstable global economy.
Difficult words: friction (disagreement, conflict, or tension between people or groups with different views), associate member (a member of an organization or group who has limited rights or status compared to full members), procurement (obtaining or buying goods and services, especially for a government or organization).
