Canada and the EU are working to build a much stronger partnership. Because of trade problems and rising costs with the United States, many Canadians prefer to buy goods from Europe and support local businesses.
European leaders discussed giving Canada a special status, but some countries like Germany and France say the rules are not clear yet. Even without a formal title, Canada and the EU are already working closer together on important projects. They are sharing plans for defense, energy, clean technology, and student programs.
Both sides believe that building strong relationships outside of North America will help protect their economy, keep energy supplies safe, and make their nations stronger for the future.
