2026 Chemistry Nobel Prize – level 2

15-10-2026 07:00

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was given to two scientists, Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai. They solved a big science mystery about molecules which look like mirror images.

In nature, many small chemicals come in two forms, like left and right hands. Living things usually use only one form to create life, but scientists didn’t know why. This discovery is extremely important for making medicine. One mirror-image form of a drug can heal a patient, while the other form might do nothing or even cause harm.

In the past, mixed drugs caused terrible health problems for many people. Thanks to these two researchers, chemical companies can now make only the good, safe version of a drug. This makes everyday medicines much safer for everyone.

Difficult words: mystery (something difficult to understand or explain), heal (to become healthy again), terrible (very bad, unpleasant, or shocking).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How can making only the correct mirror-image form of a drug prevent the terrible health problems that mixed drugs caused in the past?
