3D-printed guns – level 3
27-06-2025 07:00
The murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024 drew attention to “ghost guns” – untraceable firearms that can be made at home using 3D printers and shared blueprints.
The suspect was found with one such weapon, partly made of plastic but able to fire multiple shots.
These weapons have become more advanced and easier to build, despite being illegal in many places. Online platforms, such as Telegram and social media, play a key role in spreading information about 3D guns. Some users offer to sell and even ship these weapons internationally, violating laws.
A BBC journalist contacted one seller, who casually admitted to his activity. While not all offers are real, scammers and actual dealers both use these channels. Although building a fully working 3D-printed gun is not simple, detailed guides and stronger materials have made it possible. Experts worry about the global spread, especially in areas with strict gun laws where these weapons may become the tool of choice of criminals, militia, or extremists. Authorities are struggling to respond with new laws and controls.
Difficult words: blueprint (a design plan or technical drawing), untraceable (something that cannot be tracked or identified), militia (a group of people trained for military service, not part of the official army).
