A church moves – level 1

26-08-2025 07:00

In Sweden, there is a town called Kiruna. In this town, there is a big red church. The church is very heavy and very old. People build it in 1912. It looks like an old house of the Sámi people.

Now the church moves to a new place. It goes slowly, 5 kilometers in two days. The reason for the move is a mine. The mine makes the ground weak. People must move the town because it is safe. Many people come to see the church move. Even the king of Sweden comes. On TV, people can also watch the move.

The move costs more than 44 million euros. Some Sámi people are sad and angry. They say that the mine hurts the land, animals, and their life. They say it is bad for reindeer.

Difficult words: mine (a place where people take stone or metal from the ground), weak (not strong), reindeer (a large animal which lives in northern parts of Europe).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What causes the ground beneath the big red church to become so weak that it must be moved?
