A man is safe after 12 days in a cave – level 3

15-09-2023 07:00

In a challenging international rescue operation, 40-year-old experienced caver Mark Dickey was successfully saved from Turkey’s deep Morca Cave after falling seriously ill.

The cave is situated in the Taurus Mountains and it reaches depths of 1,276 meters. Gastrointestinal bleeding struck Dickey during an exploration mission, prompting a massive rescue effort. Multiple teams of cavers worldwide, along with Turkish specialists, joined forces to bring him out.

The cave’s treacherous conditions included steep vertical shafts, deep pits, narrow passageways, and cold temperatures, and they added complexity to the rescue. Dickey’s severe health condition required a blood transfusion within the cave.

The European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) coordinated the international rescue operation that involved over 200 aid workers from various countries who brought Dickey to safety. Mark Dickey expressed his relief and gratitude for the quick response that saved his life. His parents also expressed their joy and thanked everyone involved in the rescue.

Difficult words: gastrointestinal (relating to the stomach and intestines), treacherous (dangerous and unpredictable), complexity (the state of having many different parts related to each other in a complicated way).
