A toy helps baby monkey – level 2

02-03-2026 07:00

A baby monkey named Punch lives at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan. His mother left him when he was born. Zoo workers helped him because baby monkeys usually stay very close to their mothers.

They tried different soft objects to comfort him. Finally, they chose a stuffed orangutan toy because it has long hair and looks a bit like a monkey. Punch now carries the toy everywhere. Many people visit the zoo because videos of Punch became popular online. Also, many people go to IKEA and buy the same toy.

The zookeepers think his mother left him because of the very hot weather. Punch is still learning how to communicate with other monkeys, but he is slowly joining the group.

Difficult words: stuffed toy (a soft toy filled with cotton or soft material), zookeeper (a person who takes care of animals in a zoo), communicate (to share information or feelings).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did zoo workers choose a stuffed orangutan toy to comfort Punch?
