Algae fertilizer – level 1

10-09-2025 07:00

Scientists in Europe are trying a new fertilizer from algae.

The algae grow in dirty water from milk factories. They eat the waste and then change into powder. This powder has nitrogen, which helps plants grow. When farmers mix it with normal fertilizer, they use 25% less mineral fertilizer but still get good crops.

Algae fertilizer works slowly, so farmers must plan better. But it is easy to move and good for places where people cannot use sewage.

In Spain, workers at a big water plant in Ourense take nitrogen and phosphorus from dirty water. They make it into fertilizer for farms. These ideas help nature, save energy, and make Europe less dependent on other countries.

Difficult words: fertilizer (food for plants), algae (a green plant which grows in water), crops (plants which farmers grow for food), sewage (dirty water from homes and factories).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which two nutrients do workers in the Ourense plant extract from dirty water to make fertilizer?
