Amazon and US tariffs – level 3

02-05-2025 15:00

Amazon has denied a report that it planned to show US import tariffs on its main website.

The White House accused Amazon of making a political move after the media claimed Amazon would display the costs of tariffs on products. The company said it had only discussed this idea for Haul, its low-cost shopping site, but it was never approved. Haul competes with Chinese platforms like Temu and Shein. The confusion caused Amazon’s stock price to fall, but it later recovered. President Trump, who has increased tariffs on Chinese goods, reportedly called Amazon’s founder and said Bezos did the right thing by stopping the plan.

Lawmakers like Chuck Schumer and Marjorie Taylor Greene gave their opinions, with some asking Amazon to be more transparent about tariff costs. Amazon is under pressure as Trump pushes for more US manufacturing and closes tax loopholes for cheap imports. The situation highlights growing political and trade tensions between the US and China.

Difficult words: tariff (extra tax on goods from other countries), transparent (open and honest), loophole (a gap in law).
