Australia’s insect collection – level 2

24-02-2025 15:00

A group of insect lovers visited Australia’s Northern Territory’s biggest insect collection at Berrimah Farm Science Precinct.

The collection has 56,000 insects, including butterflies, spiders, and stick insects. Some of them are more than 50 years old. The visit was part of a special event for the collection’s 40th anniversary. The guests were members of the NT Field Naturalists’ Club, a group of people who enjoy studying nature. They help scientists by finding new insects and reporting dangerous ones. In 2023, a club member discovered a harmful insect called the papaya mealybug.

Dr. Thistleton and his team check the club’s Facebook group for new insect pictures. He said the collection is very important for science and helps protect nature.

Difficult words: collection (a group of things someone keeps together), stick insect (a long, slow-moving insect which looks like a stick), anniversary (the date on which something happens in the past).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What types of insects are housed in the collection, and how do NT Field Naturalists’ Club members contribute to research and environmental protection, including a notable discovery in 2023?
