Austria’s glaciers are getting smaller – level 1

17-03-2026 15:00

Most glaciers in Austria are getting smaller. A report says that 94 of 96 glaciers move back in the last two years. The Pasterze Glacier is also breaking apart.

Scientists say that this happens because of warmer weather and less snow. Last year, June is much hotter than usual.

Similar changes are happening in Switzerland and other countries. Experts say that melting glaciers can bring problems for water, energy, and tourism in the mountains. It is time to think about how to stop climate change.

Difficult words: glacier (a river of ice which moves down a mountain), break apart (to break into smaller pieces), melt (to change into water).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What problems do experts warn may result from the melting of glaciers in the mountains?
