Bangladesh Funeral – level 3

24-04-2020 07:00

An estimated 100,000 people attended a funeral of a top Islamic preacher in Bangladesh last weekend.

People turned up despite a nationwide lockdown that bans large gatherings there. Local police said that they were helpless to stop the crowds who came to honor the popular cleric.

The government has been criticized for failing to stop the event in the Brahmanbaria district. One of the organizers said that he wanted to make arrangements for a small funeral following the government’s guidelines on health and safety; however, people gathered to show their respect without organizers’ knowledge.

There are almost 2,500 people with the coronavirus in the country, and 91 reported deaths. However, according to officials, the actual numbers of confirmed cases are probably higher due to the lack of testing kits. The nationwide lockdown should end on April 25.

Difficult words: honor (to show respect), cleric (a priest or religious leader, especially a Christian or Muslim one), arrangement (a plan).
