Bangladesh secret prisons – level 3

22-04-2025 15:00

Even after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in Bangladesh, victims of her regime still live in fear.

Many people were taken by force and kept in secret detention centers, where they were blindfolded, handcuffed, and tortured for weeks, months, or even years. Some victims described being unable to move in their small cells and said the experience felt worse than death. These centers were hidden across the country for years.

Now, journalists can see these places and speak to survivors. Several former detainees say that the same people who captured and hurt them are still active in the military or police. Investigators believe that the program of forced disappearances was approved by Hasina herself. Although the new government claims it is not involved, many survivors are still afraid to speak out. Rahman Rasel, one of the victims, says he fears being taken again. He and others hope the new government will finally bring justice.

Difficult words: regime (a system of government), handcuffed (having a metal fastening locked around wrists), detainee (a person kept in prison).

Why do many survivors remain afraid to speak out, even after journalists began visiting the hidden detention centers?
