Big Water on Mallorca – level 3

17-10-2018 15:00

Military and emergency services are continuing to search for missing people caught in the flash floods on the Spanish island of Mallorca. At least ten people died in the disaster caused by torrential rain.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez flew in to support the emergency services, and tennis player Rafael Nadal joined the recovery efforts. People filmed Nadal helping residents clear mud from their houses left by the rainstorms. He also opened up his tennis academy on the island for those in need of shelter.

Difficult words: torrential rain (extremely heavy rain over a short period of time), shelter (a place to stay).
