Brazilian athletes and the Olympics – level 2

14-05-2024 07:00

Brazilian athletes in Rio Grande do Sul are helping flood victims instead of following their Olympic dreams.

Rowers Evaldo Becker and Piedro Tuchtenhagen decided to help in rescue efforts. Swimmer Viviane Jungblut withdrew from the Olympics to focus on helping. World surfing champion Italo Ferreira and Brazil’s judo team coach, Antonio Carlos Kiko Pereira, also joined rescue work. There were plans to relocate athletes for training, but many stayed to help. Former Olympic athletes, for example, gymnast Daiane dos Santos and swimmer Nicholas Santos, volunteered.

The floods in Rio Grande do Sul killed many people and forced thousands to leave their homes. Water levels dropped, but people expect more rain to come.

Difficult words: withdraw (to decide not to take part), relocate (to move from one place to another), volunteer (to freely offer to do something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Who are some of the Brazilian athletes that decided to help with the flood rescue efforts in Rio Grande do Sul instead of focusing on their Olympic dreams?
