Buddhist monks come to Washington – level 2

13-02-2026 15:00

Nineteen Buddhist monks walk across the United States for 108 days and arrive in Washington. They start in Texas and travel more than 3,700 kilometres. They want to share a message of peace and calmness.

Many people follow them online and meet them in different cities. The monks wear orange clothes and travel with a rescue dog.

Many people welcome them in Washington. About 3,500 people sit quietly in a large hall to show respect. During the trip, a truck hits their car. Two monks get hurt, and one monk loses his leg. Later, he joins the group again in a wheelchair.

The monks say they don’t plan a political protest. They teach meditation and ask people to live in peace every day. The number 108 has special meaning in Buddhism.

Difficult words: monk (a man who lives with other religious people and follows rules), peace (a state with no war, fighting, or stress), wheelchair (a chair with wheels for a person who cannot walk).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How did one monk rejoin the group after losing his leg in the accident?
