Bulgarian president ends – level 2

23-01-2026 15:00

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev says he will leave his job and start a new political party.

He wants to run for prime minister before early elections. He says corrupt leaders and secret businesses hurt democracy. Bulgaria had many elections and several governments because parties couldn’t form a good government.

Radev says many people feel poor and unsafe even after Bulgaria joins the eurozone. Many people stop voting because they don’t trust courts, politicians, or the media. Large protests show strong public anger. He also speaks about the war near Bulgaria and says peace matters most.

Some people say that Radev is close to Russia, but he doesn’t agree with that.  After he leaves his job, the vice president will become president.

Difficult words: elections (public votes to choose leaders), corrupt (dishonest and willing to break rules for personal profit), democracy (a system where people choose their leaders by voting).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which factors does Radev mention as undermining democracy and prompting many Bulgarians to lose faith in voting?
