Bulgarian president ends – level 3
23-01-2026 15:00
Rumen Radev, the president of Bulgaria, says he will resign and start a new political party. He made this move only two months before the early elections.
Bulgaria has a political system in which the government depends on parliament, rather than the president. According to Radev, democracy is in danger because of corruption, secret deals, and extreme views. He plans to run for prime minister, a move that many people have been expecting for a long time.
Radev says people feel unhappy even after Bulgaria joins the Schengen area and the eurozone. Many people stop voting because they don’t trust politicians, courts, or the media. Radev says protests show deep anger in society. During his time as president, he has named seven temporary governments because parties couldn’t work together.
Radev also speaks about foreign policy and the war near Bulgaria. Some people call him pro-Russian; however, he says he wants peace and safety. He also supports a public vote on the euro, which the parliament refuses. The vice president will take his role after Radev resigns.
Difficult words: resign (to leave a job by your own choice), corruption (dishonest or illegal use of power for money or advantage), temporary government (a short-term government that runs the country until a new one forms).

What reasons does Radev give for Bulgarians’ distrust in politicians, courts, and the media?
