Cameroon crisis – level 2
30-05-2025 07:00
Cameroon will have elections in October, but a war is still happening in the English-speaking areas.
This war started in 2016 after people protested because they felt treated badly. The protests became violent when the government used force. Now, many people are fighting. Some want to make a new country called Ambazonia. More than 6,000 people died and many left their homes. The situation has a bad impact on workers and schools. Some people are missing. The army and the fighters both do bad things.
Journalists find it hard to work because they are not safe. Peace talks didn’t change anything. The people in the area still live in fear. It is not clear when this war will stop.
Difficult words: treated (how others help you or speak about you), violent (using force to hurt people or break things), peace talk (a meeting to try to stop a war or fighting).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What name have the separatists chosen for the new country they are fighting to create?
