Cameroon crisis – level 3
30-05-2025 07:00
Cameroon is preparing for presidential elections in October, while a violent conflict continues in its two English-speaking regions.
This conflict started in 2016 after peaceful protests against discrimination turned into a crisis. The government responded with force, leading to violent clashes between Cameroonian troops and separatists who want to create a new country called Ambazonia. The conflict has caused the deaths of over 6,000 people and forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes. Schools, businesses, and families have suffered greatly. The separatists have attacked people they see as supporting the government. This includes civil servants and workers of state-run companies. Some have been kidnapped or killed.
At the same time, government forces have been accused of serious human rights abuses like torture, rape, and burning villages. Both sides have tried to silence journalists reporting on the crisis, making it hard to know what is really happening. Even after several peace efforts, the situation remains very unstable. Many people are still suffering and afraid, with no clear end in sight.
Difficult words: discrimination (unfair treatment of people), separatist (a person who wants a region to become independent), civil servant (a person who works in a department of a country’s government).

What name have the separatists given to the new country they’re trying to establish?
