Canada puts tariffs on US products – level 3
05-02-2025 07:00
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will impose 25% tariffs on billions of dollars worth of US goods.
This decision responds to US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports. While Trudeau hoped to negotiate before tariffs take effect on Tuesday, Trump has ignored his calls. Trump has signed an order to apply 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods and 10% on Chinese imports. He justified these tariffs by blaming both countries for illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the US.
Mexico also plans to impose tariffs on US products. President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected US accusations of drug cartel connections and criticized the lack of US action on fentanyl use. Canada’s counter-tariffs target products from Republican-leaning states, such as bourbon from Kentucky and orange juice from Florida. Some provinces are doubling tolls on American trucks and removing US products from store shelves. Economic experts warn that these tariffs could disrupt industries and trigger a recession.
Difficult words: tariff (a tax on imported goods), justify (to give a reason for something), disrupt (cause problems).
