Chinese hackers attack US computers – level 3
13-01-2025 07:00
The US Treasury Department reported that Chinese hackers infiltrated its systems in a state-sponsored cyberattack.
Officials revealed to Congress that the breach occurred in December when hackers exploited software vulnerabilities in third-party software. Ryan Kalember, a cybersecurity expert, explained that the attackers exploited flaws in software designed to manage privileged accounts remotely. This allowed them access to sensitive but unclassified documents. This attack follows a pattern of Chinese state actors targeting supply chains and cybersecurity tools. China denies involvement and opposes hacking.
Although described as a major incident, Kalember noted it is less severe than other cyberattacks, as no classified information was accessed. He warned, however, that supply chain attacks pose ongoing challenges for the US government due to reliance on third-party vendors.
Difficult words: infiltrate (to enter secretly), exploit (to make use unfairly to get an advantage), flaw (a mistake or problem), unclassified (not secret).
