Clearing landmines in Syria – level 2

21-04-2025 15:00

Syria has many landmines and bombs left from years of war. They are still very dangerous.

The HALO Trust works to clean these places so people can go home safely. In Sarak, a town in the north, workers remove bombs from the land, but the job is slow and dangerous. Many people return to their homes before the land is safe. Some people pay workers who are not trained enough. These workers sometimes get hurt or die.

The HALO Trust wants to get more tools and people to help clean faster. They also teach people how to stay safe. Some workers lost arms or legs, but they still want to help. Many people and animals are hurt because the bombs are still there.

Difficult words: landmine (a bomb in the ground), trained (having enough training or skills for a job), remove (to take away).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the consequences of hiring untrained workers to remove bombs?
