Cows on the road – level 3

20-05-2025 07:00

Traffic on Highway 400 in Ontario, Canada, was heavily delayed due to a herd of cows that escaped and wandered onto the road.

The highway connects Toronto to Cottage Country, and many people were using it for the first long weekend of summer. The cows were first seen near Aurora Road and moved several kilometers, causing danger to both animals and drivers. Police officers and farmers worked together to guide the cows off the road and into trailers. Some were captured, but a few were still loose.

According to Sergeant Kerry Schmidt, the cows may have been frightened by thunder and lightning during the night. They broke out of their enclosure and began wandering. Some cows entered construction zones, moved in different directions, and even charged at people and vehicles. Officers had to dive for safety several times. Animal welfare groups are helping, and one farmer was injured. Everyone is working hard to protect the cows and prevent accidents, especially before nightfall when visibility becomes poor.

Difficult words: trailer (a large container pulled by a car or truck), loose (free to move around), charge (to run quickly at someone or something).
