Cubans fight for Russia – level 3

06-10-2023 07:00

A report has revealed that Cubans are being recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine.

Yamidley Cervantes, a Cuban seamstress, shared how her husband left for Russia to join the Russian army, providing financial support for their family. The signing bonus of 200,000 roubles he received is more than 100 times the average Cuban monthly salary. La Federal, their small community, is deeply affected by unemployment, with many residents leaving for Russia due to necessity.

Some Cubans volunteered for combat roles, while others opted for non-fighting positions. Despite the Cuban government’s denial of involvement, more than a hundred Cubans are training in Russia for military service, although their exact deployment location remains uncertain. The economic crisis in Cuba and the promise of financial stability in Russia have driven many to make this drastic choice, with some families even relocating to be with their enlisted loved ones.

Difficult words: seamstress (a woman whose job is to sew), denial (saying that something isn’t true), relocate (to change the location).

How have the Cuban people responded to news of their countrymen joining the Russian army in Ukraine?
