Duolingo achieved massive financial success; it reached 1 billion dollars in revenue in 2025. How? By prioritizing gamification features like notifications, streak freezes, and leaderboards.

However, the company faced severe backlash after firing contractors to replace language courses with lower-quality generative AI content. This hyper-focus on user engagement over educational value eventually triggered a massive market correction. Duolingo’s stock plummeted roughly 80 percent from its peak near 544 dollars down to around 101 dollars by spring 2026. Investors grew skeptical as daily active user growth slowed, and law firms opened securities fraud investigations regarding potentially misleading growth metrics.
