Drones in Gaza – level 3
27-05-2025 15:00
In Gaza, the sound of drones is constant. Al Jazeera’s Sanad team found that Israel is using DJI drones, originally made for civilian purposes, in military operations.
These drones, often used by farmers or filmmakers, are now being used for surveillance, tunnel searches, and even bombing. Some drones, like the Agras model, were built to spray crops but have been modified to drop explosives on homes, schools, and hospitals.
Footage confirmed by Sanad shows several attacks using these repurposed drones, including strikes near shelters and hospitals in Gaza. In one case, a drone dropped a bomb just 100 meters from a school. Another drone was seen tracking a man and making him open doors while soldiers followed. People say they had to flee again because of drone strikes.
Although DJI stopped selling drones to Russia and Ukraine in 2022, they still sell to Israel. DJI says its drones are for peaceful use and that Israel has no special access, but many are concerned about how these drones are being used in war.
Difficult words: constant (happening all the time, without stopping), surveillance (watching people or places closely), repurposed (changed to be used in a different way than it was made for).
