Dubai floods – level 3

23-04-2024 15:00

Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest travel hubs, reopened partially after heavy flooding shut it down due to a record-breaking storm in the United Arab Emirates.

The storm brought unprecedented rainfall, caused extensive damage, and claimed at least one life. Streets in Dubai resembled rivers as torrential rain overwhelmed the city and halted its financial activities. The immediate threat of the storm passed; however, the airport still faced challenges. Grounded jets occupied much of the available space which led to delays and overcrowding in terminals as stranded passengers wanted to rebook canceled flights.

Experts suggest that while the role of climate change in this extreme weather event is not entirely clear, such incidents may become more frequent as global temperatures rise. Despite efforts like cloud seeding, the intensity of this rainfall indicates that people need to take broader climate adaptation measures.

Difficult words: unprecedented (never seen or done before), resemble (to be like or similar to someone or something), adaptation (adjustment or change to cope with the new condition).
