Eating salmon hurts the planet – level 1

30-01-2026 07:00

Many people in Europe eat salmon. There are not many wild salmon now. People eat farm salmon. Most farm salmon comes from other countries, usually from Norway. Fish farms help save wild fish. But they have problems too.

Many farms keep fish in sea cages. Dirty water and chemicals go into the sea. Fish live very close to each other. When a fish gets sick, other fish get sick too. Farmers use strong chemicals to stop this. People do not see these problems underwater.

Some farms try to care for fish better. Labels help people choose better salmon. But labels do not always mean that the fish live well.

Difficult words: salmon (a large fish with pink meat), wild (not from a farm), cage (a space where people keep animals inside).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What happens when farmed salmon are kept very close together in sea cages?
