El Salvador will take criminals – level 3

10-02-2025 15:00

El Salvador has offered to house dangerous criminals deported from the US, including gang members from groups like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua.

This announcement came after a meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. On his first overseas tour, Rubio is looking to strengthen regional support for the Trump administration’s deportation policies.

In addition to accepting its own deported citizens, El Salvador has proposed acting as a third country that takes in criminals from other nations unwilling to accept them, such as Venezuela and Cuba. Bukele even suggested housing dangerous criminals who are US citizens or legal residents, though it is unclear whether the US will consider this offer.

While this proposal aligns with the US goal of deporting more criminals, concerns remain over El Salvador’s harsh prison conditions. The agreement details are still being finalized.

Difficult words: deportation (forcing someone to leave a country), unwilling (not wanting to do something), align (to match or support an idea or plan).
