EU leaders talk about Greenland – level 3

29-01-2026 07:00

European Union leaders held an emergency meeting after rising tension with the United States over Greenland and possible trade punishment.

The concern followed comments by President Donald Trump about taking control of Greenland and using tariffs against European allies. EU leaders said they would defend themselves against pressure and said that only Denmark and Greenland can decide Greenland’s future.

After the meeting, Trump pulled back his threats of tariffs and said a deal with the NATO leader could help the United States reach its goals. EU officials welcomed this change and said the situation looked calmer than a day earlier. They showed support for Denmark and Greenland, and also for EU countries that faced trade threats.

However, there are still many questions. The details of the deal with NATO are unclear, and Trump repeated that Greenland matters for US and global security. European leaders said they accept more US defense but disagreed with any change of borders. Denmark’s prime minister later traveled to Greenland for talks.

Difficult words: punishment (something bad you do to someone because they break a rule), ally (a country or person that helps and supports you), threat (a sign or warning that someone may do something bad).

Which two parties did EU leaders say have the authority to decide Greenland’s future?
