France has new rules on assisted dying – level 2
02-06-2025 07:00
In France, the National Assembly agreed on a new rule which says that people with incurable illnesses can ask to take medicine that ends their life.
The vote had 305 people in favor and 199 against. Now, the Senate will look at the rule which may take a long time. Only people over 18, living in France, and with strong pain that cannot be treated can ask for this medicine. They must ask on their own and confirm it after some time. If they cannot take the medicine alone, a doctor or nurse can help.
The parliament also accepted a rule about palliative care which helps very ill people who have big pain. Many people in France support these changes, but some say the process is too slow.
Difficult words: incurable (a disease which doctors cannot cure), in favor (to agree with or support something), treated (when someone gets care or medicine to feel better).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are the eligibility requirements and procedural steps for someone to request the life-ending medicine, and who may assist them if they cannot take it alone?
