Genetically edited babies – level 1

05-12-2025 15:00

A company called Preventive gets 30 million dollars to study how to change the genes of babies before birth. This is called genome editing.

The company says that it helps stop sickness in babies. People who like the idea say that it helps people stay healthy. But many people do not like this plan. They worry about safety. They also worry that parents try to pick their baby’s traits, like in eugenics.

If doctors change a baby’s genes, these changes go to all future children. This makes the risk very big. Other ways to stop sickness already exist. The company must show that its research is safe.

Difficult words: gene (a part of a cell that controls how a person looks or grows), trait (a specific quality or characteristic of a person), eugenics (the belief or practice of carefully controlling who has children and what they are like).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What makes the risk of genome editing very big?
