German companies in trouble – level 3

16-05-2025 15:00

A fertilizer factory in northern Germany has existed for over 100 years, but its future is uncertain.

It made a loss in 2024 and is now working at a lower capacity because of high energy prices. These rising costs and low demand are creating problems for the company, and it is unclear if the business model can still be successful.

This problem doesn’t concern only one company. Many German factories are producing less and letting workers go. While Germany has protected industrial jobs more than many other countries, some businesses and whole industries are now at risk. The new government wants to invest more money to support both old industries and new technologies, but it is still unknown if this will work.

Germany is one of the world’s top manufacturing countries. It makes products like machines, steel, and textiles. When compared to its size, Germany produces more than many other rich nations. People are now asking how the country can keep these jobs and grow its economy.

Difficult words: fertilizer (a substance that makes plants grow better and faster), capacity (the amount something can produce or hold).
